Weekly: two minutes, big payoff

Dust is the quiet enemy of every curtain. It settles into the weave, dulls the colour and slowly abrades the fibres every time the fabric moves. Once a week, run a vacuum with the soft brush attachment lightly down each drop, top to bottom, on low suction. Sheers need an especially gentle hand. If you do only one thing on this list, do this one.

Monthly: the once over

Give each curtain a proper look once a month. Check the heading tape and hooks are sitting evenly, glide the curtains fully open and closed to keep tracks moving freely, and look for any marks while they are still fresh enough to lift easily. For motorised curtain tracks, listen for any change in the motor sound, which is usually the first sign the track needs a clean.

Spot clean marks immediately with a barely damp white cloth, dabbing rather than rubbing, always from the outside of the mark inward. Never scrub, and never use coloured cloths or harsh cleaners on curtain fabric.

Seasonally: freshen and air

Melbourne homes close up through winter, and fabrics hold onto that. On a dry, breezy day each season, open the windows and let air move through the curtains for a few hours. It lifts odours, discourages moisture and costs nothing. This is also the moment to rotate any curtains in harsh sun exposure if the design allows, so UV wear spreads evenly rather than bleaching one edge.

Yearly: the deep clean

Once a year, most curtains benefit from professional cleaning, and here is the important part: check your fabric care instructions before anything goes near a washing machine. While the curtains are down, vacuum the tracks and pelmets properly, wipe the rods, and check every bracket is still firm in the wall.

The mistakes that age curtains fastest

A few habits quietly destroy good curtains. Letting them press against condensation on cold windows, which invites mould into the lining. Tugging them open by the fabric instead of using the wand, cord or leading edge. Ignoring a sticking track and forcing it. Machine washing anything with a blockout backing. And leaving delicate fabrics in full summer sun with no sheer or awning protection on the glass. Every one of these is avoidable, and avoiding them is worth years of life.
